Novak Djokovic’s Andy Murray tribute speaks volumes as emotional Dan Evans reacts

Novak Djokovic paid tribute to his old rival Andy Murray as the Brit officially entered retirement. Murray suffered defeat in the quarter-final of the men’s doubles at the Olympics with Dan Evans, the final match of his career.

World No. 2 Djokovic came off court at a similar time and shared a telling statement about the three-time Grand Slam champion’s character.

Evans also lauded Murray as a “figurehead” for British tennis after having the honour of joining forces with the two-time gold medallist for his farewell.

Djokovic and Murray have shared the biggest stages in the sport, meeting in the finals of all four Grand Slams. They have also played for the year-end No. 1 ranking and have known each other since childhood. After his old foe hung up his racket, the 24-time Grand Slam champion had nothing but kind words to say.

“I have only praise for him. He’s been an incredible competitor out on the court one of the greatest warriors tennis has seen. His fighting spirit is something that will inspire many generations to come. I’ve been inspired by him even though we’re the same age,” Djokovic said after reaching the singles semi-final.

Explaining how committed Murray was, the top seed continued: “With his artificial hip, surgeries and all the injuries, to keep coming back and keep grinding at the Challenger level to build rankings. That is super impressive for someone who has had the career he’s had. To go for No. 1 to low rankings and try to works his way back is great testament to his incredible spirit.”
