‘Scared’ tennis star snubbed Olympics for same reason as Emma Raducanu
Emma Raducanu admitted that she was surprised at the level of support she had when reaching the quarter-finals of the Citi Open, downing a home favourite in Peyton Stearns to get there.
The Brit was serving to take the first set when the heavens opened and a downpour of rain forced the tie to be suspended, only for Raducanu to win 7-6(6) 6-2 upon the match’s resumption.
Tennis star Paula Badosa has revealed she was too “scared” to compete for Spain at the Paris Olympics as she deals with a chronic back injury that has threatened to end her career. The 26-year-old has instead followed Emma Raducanu to the Citi DC Open in Washington, with the Briton also turning down the opportunity to compete in Paris.
Badosa was ranked at No. 2 in the world in April 2022 but has fallen down the standings following a string of injury issues.
She was forced to miss three Grand Slams last year but entered the Australian Open, French Open and Wimbledon this year, succumbing to Donna Vekic in the fourth round at the All England Club in July.
And after defeating Sofia Kenin in the second round in Washington, Badosa explained why she skipped the Olympics.
“In the last two tournaments that I played on grass I felt good sensations and I have to say that I felt good,” she said.
“In the last one, it was a shame because I was very close and I showed a great level. I am confident in view of the season on hard courts, I love this phase.
