Andy Murray’s mum fires Serena Williams dig at Emma Raducanu in latest outburst
Andy Murray’s mum appears to have aimed another dig at Emma Raducanu on social media after the 21-year-old pulled out of the Wimbledon mixed doubles. Raducanu left Judy Murray furious for pulling out just hours before what could have been the two-time SW19 champion’s final match ever at the tournament.
Judy Murray took to Instagram to share a quote from one of Murray’s former mixed doubles partners, the great Serena Williams. The two tennis legends, Murray and Williams, teamed up at SW19 in 2019, reaching the third round.
“Playing mixed doubles by your side was one of the highlights of my life,” the quote read, in a potential dig at Raducanu. “I’m so grateful I had that experience.”
Raducanu’s reasoning for pulling out, which resulted in Murray’s potential farewell game at Wimbledon being cancelled, was cited as soreness in her wrist. The decision came after the 2021 U.S. Open champion reached the fourth round of the women’s singles on Friday.
A statement from the Raducanu camp said: “Unfortunately I woke up with some stiffness in my right wrist this morning, so therefore I have decided to make the very tough decision to withdraw from the mixed doubles tonight. I’m disappointed as I was really looking forward to playing with Andy but got to take care.”
Judy Murray had also hit out at Raducanu on X. The 64-year-old reacted in agreement with sports presenter Marcus Buckland, who couldn’t believe that Raducanu had pulled out. “Astonishing news that Emma Raducanu has withdrawn from her mixed doubles match with Andy Murray,” Buckland wrote. “She’s citing soreness in her right wrist. It means Murray has played his last match at Wimbledon. Oh dear!”
Judy Murray issued a short, two-word response to Buckland. “Yes, astonishing,” she replied.
