Prince Harry makes surprising statement after receiving controversial award

Prince Harry paid respect to Pat Tillman’s mother Mary during his acceptance speech at the 2024 ESPYS.

The Duke of Sussex was presented with the Pat Tillman Award for Service on July 11 at Dolby Theatre, Los Angeles.

Notably, The former working royal was accompanied by his better half, Meghan Markle, at the event.

During his acceptance speech, Harry seemingly addressed the backlash that has been directed at him for being perceived as undeserving of this accolade.

King Charles’s youngest son began his heartfelt speech by acknowledging the “Tillman family, especially Mary Tillman, Pat’s mother – her advocacy for Pat’s legacy is deeply personal and one that I respect.”

He added, “The bond between a mother and son is eternal and transcends even the greatest losses.”

Harry told the crowd that he was not accepting this honour as a Prince but rather as a voice on behalf of the Invictus Game Foundation.

“And the thousands of veterans and service personnel from over 20 nations who have made the Invictus Games a reality. This award belongs to them not to me,” Harry stated.

Harry believes it is important to highlight the “allies and the families” of such veterans for their “achievements, their spirit, and their courage” at every opportunity. He continued, “Especially on nights like this in front of people like you.”
