Camila Giorgi finally speaks out after ‘going missing’ and ‘fleeing Italy’

Camila Giorgi has broken her silence and released a statement after suddenly retiring from tennis and reportedly fleeing Italy. The WTA were said to be unable to contact the Italian after she quit tennis without any public comment, but the 32-year-old has now explained the unusual state of affairs.

The Wimbledon and Olympics quarter-finalist was listed on the International Tennis Integrity Agency website as a retired player, effectively withdrawing her from anti-doping protocols that are required to play professional tennis.

However, such measures are typically accompanied by a public statement from players, informing their fans of the decision and reflecting on their careers.

No such message was made by Giorgi, with further eyebrows raised when the WTA were reportedly unable to contact her, having not played since defeat to Iga Swiatek at the Miami Open on March 23.

On Saturday, Italian reports claimed that Giorgi had fled Italy to the United States, with authorities in her homeland looking to question her regarding gaps in her tax returns.

She is said to have been joined by her dad Sergio, mum Claudio and brothers Leandro and Amadeus, having cut ties with the WTA and fellow Italian star Tathiana Garbin claiming that they had last spoken before the Billie Jean King Cup.
